Environmental Systems Laboratory, Department of Chemical Engineering

Environmental Systems Laboratory, Department of Chemical Engineering

The Environmental Systems Laboratory (Department of Chemical Engineering) deals with the physicochemical and biological treatment of wastes (solid and liquid). The laboratory’ s research team has great experience in the design/construction and operation of such units in industrial scale.

Lab head: Dimitris Vayenas

Education

  • Diploma, Chemical Engineering, University of Patras, 1991
  • Ph.D., Chemical Engineering, University of Patras, 1995

Research interests

  • Potable water treatment: removal of hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, iron, manganese (www.water-biofilter.gr), autotrophic hydrogenotrophic denitrification
  • Treatment of agro-industrial wastewater: olive mill, table olive, dairy
  • Treatment of industrial wastewater: hexavalent chromium
  • Application of microalgae for wastewater treatment and biodiesel production
  • Modeling of biological processes

Kostas Papadopoulos studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Patras and graduated in 2018. Since then, he has been a PhD candidate at the same Department and member of the ‘Environmental Systems Laboratory’, while in 2021 he collaborated with the Algal Innovation Center at the University of Cambridge. His research focuses in developing and modelling sustainable wastewater treatment and utilization processes that include photosynthetic microorganisms.

Andreas Benekos graduated from the department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Patras, in 2018. Since then, he is a PhD candidate of the department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Patras. His interests’ areas of research include the autotrophic hydrogenotrophic denitrification bacteria development for their application in denitrifying trickling filters for potable water purposes. Furthermore, he specializes in mathematical modeling of biological processes.

Stefania Patsialou studied at the Department of Chemistry, University of Crete, and completed her Bachelor Diploma during 2016. Following that, she successfully defended her Master Thesis in Inorganic Chemistry at the same Department. In 2020 she started her PhD dissertation at the Department of Environmental Engineering, University of Patras. Her main research focus on the application of biological filters for the processing of industrial wastewater and the study of microalgae consortium to obtain high value products from wastewater.

Charikleia Ζampeta received Chemical Engineering Diploma from the University of Patras. She is a PhD candidate at the Chemical Engineering Department since 2018 at Process and Environmental Engineering faculty. Her research interests include the study of wastewater treatment and especially the study of electrocoagulation and cavitation.
