Environmental Systems Laboratory, Department of Environmental Engineering
The scientific interests of the Environmental Systems Laboratory of Department of Environmental Engineering [ESL (DEE)] are related to issues of environmental protection (i.e. physicochemical and biological waste-treatment) and the development of new technologies for this purpose. The ESL (DEE) has contributed significantly to basic research and biotechnological applications of microalgae and cyanobacteria. In particular, the growth of various strains in laboratory and large-scale bioreactors has been studied in this laboratory.

Ph.D. Thesis: The study of biological removal mechanisms of pollutants from potable water using trickling filters
Research interests
Technologies of drinking water/toxic wastewater treatment using physicochemical and, mainly, biological processes, aiming to optimize performance
Supervision of treatment plants for the biological removal of water pollutants (ammonia, iron, manganese) and the biological treatment of industrial wastewaters (dairy, olive mill, table olive, winery, hexavalent chromium, etc.)
Process modelling leading to the design of effective and economic systems for drinking water and wastewater treatment
Vasiliki Patrinou studied at the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources Management, University of Patras, and completed her Bachelor Diploma during 2016. Following that, at 2017 she successfully defended her Master Thesis in Environmental Protection and Management Applications at the same Department. In 2018 she started her PhD dissertation at the Department of Environmental Engineering, University of Patras. At 2020 she obtained a certificate of equivalence and correspondence with the Diploma of the Department of Environmental Engineering, University of Patras. Her main research focus on the applications of microalgae/cyanobacteria for wastewater treatment and high added value product recovery.
Stefania Patsialou studied at the Department of Chemistry, University of Crete, and completed her Bachelor Diploma during 2016. Following that, she successfully defended her Master Thesis in Inorganic Chemistry at the same Department. In 2020 she started her PhD dissertation at the Department of Environmental Engineering, University of Patras. Her main research focus on the application of biological filters for the processing of industrial wastewater and the study of microalgae consortium to obtain high value products from wastewater.
